Halai in History

The Northeast Gate Complex

This gate complex apparantly served as a major entry portal for the acropolis of Halai in the Hellenistic Era. Structures displayed in cyan on the schematic diagram have been tentitively dated to the Hellenistic period, while the yellow towards the left of the diagram represents the earlier, Archaic, fortifications. Pictured in the darker blue, are later Roman additions, in particular the Roman structure in the top right of the diagram. Round towers, such as the one pictured, appear to represent the consicious effort of military architecture to cope with the increased efficacy of artillery in the Hellenistic age. Round towers were better able to deflect the incomming shots of ballistae and other seige weaponry. Whether our small tower would have actually proved effective in the face of a concerted seige effort, or simply reflected trends in military construction, is debatable.
